Questions Every Texas Homeowner Should Ask About Their Roof

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home, protecting your family and belongings from Texas heat, hail, wind, and severe weather. But knowing when your roof needs attention, what your insurance covers, and what to expect from a roofing project can be confusing.

To help Texas homeowners make informed decisions, Precision Roofing Works has answered some of the most common questions we hear about roof damage, insurance claims, materials, costs, maintenance, permits, and the roofing process.

Roof Damage & When to Call

How do I know if my roof was damaged in a storm?

Common signs include missing, cracked, or curling shingles, granules collecting in gutters or downspouts, dented gutters or vents, exposed nail heads, and daylight visible through the attic decking. Hail damage in particular can look minor from the ground but compromise the shingle’s ability to shed water. A ground-level look often isn’t enough.

My roof looks fine. Do I still need an inspection after a hailstorm?

Yes. Hail bruising and wind uplift frequently aren’t visible from the driveway. A professional inspection checks the shingle mat, flashing, vents, and valleys up close, which is where damage typically starts.

How often should I have my roof inspected in Texas?

At minimum once a year, and always after a significant hail or wind event. Texas’s swings between intense summer heat, hail, and high winds age roofing materials faster than milder climates.

What’s the difference between storm damage and normal wear and tear?

Storm damage is sudden and event-specific, such as hail impacts, wind-lifted shingles, and tree limb strikes. Wear and tear is gradual: UV degradation, granule loss over years, and material fatigue near the end of a roof’s rated life. This distinction matters because insurance typically covers the former, not the latter.

How long does a roof in Texas typically last?

Asphalt shingle roofs generally run 20–30 years depending on the product line, but Texas heat, UV exposure, and hail frequency can shorten that significantly.

Insurance Claims

Will my homeowner’s insurance cover roof replacement?

Most Texas homeowner policies cover roof damage caused by a covered peril, such as hail, wind, or fire, but not damage from age, neglect, or lack of maintenance. Coverage and depreciation schedules vary by carrier and policy. We can help you understand what an adjuster’s report means, but the policy language is what governs.

Do you handle the insurance claim process for me?

We can meet your insurance adjuster on-site, document damage, and provide a scope and estimate that supports your claim. The claim itself, including filing, approval, and payment, is between you and your insurance carrier. If an insurance claim is denied, homeowners can contact Precision Roofing Works for support, assessment, or consultation.

Can a roofing contractor legally negotiate my insurance claim for me?

In Texas, contractors cannot act as public adjusters or be compensated based on the size of your insurance settlement. That requires a licensed public adjuster. A legitimate contractor can advocate for a fair, code-compliant scope during the adjuster meeting, but can’t “negotiate” your claim in the way a public adjuster does.

What’s my deductible, and do I have to pay it?

Your deductible is set by your policy and is your responsibility. Texas law prohibits contractors from waiving, rebating, or absorbing your insurance deductible.

What should I watch out for with “storm chaser” roofing companies?

After major hail events, out-of-state crews often go door-to-door offering free inspections and pressuring same-day contracts.

Red flags include:

  • No permanent local address
  • Demands for large upfront payment
  • Offers to cover your deductible
  • Pressure to sign before you’ve talked to your insurer

Verify a company is licensed to do business in Texas, has local references, and will be around for warranty service next year.

Materials, Process & Cost

What roofing materials do you install?

We install high-quality roofing materials designed to provide dependable protection and lasting performance in Texas weather. We offer classic asphalt shingles as well as upgraded impact-resistant options, and we’ll help you select the right materials based on your home’s style, your roofing needs, and your long-term goals.

How much does a new roof cost in Texas?

Cost depends on roof size and pitch, material selection, decking condition, and local permit and disposal costs. We provide a written, itemized estimate after an on-site assessment rather than a ballpark over the phone, since roof-to-roof variation is significant.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most single-family residential replacements are completed in one to a few days, weather permitting. Repairs are typically same-day to a few days depending on scope.

Do I need to be home during the roof replacement?

Not for the whole project, but we’ll coordinate access, note anything fragile inside, and walk the property with you at completion. Some interior shaking is normal during tear-off.

What happens to my old roofing materials?

Tear-off debris is hauled away and disposed of or recycled as part of the project. It’s included in your estimate, not a separate line item you should have to chase down.

Will roofing work damage my landscaping, gutters, or driveway?

We take precautions, including tarps, plywood staging, and magnetic nail sweeps, to protect landscaping and driveways and to catch stray nails and debris. Let us know about anything particularly delicate before work starts.

Permits, Codes & HOA

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Texas?

Most Texas municipalities require a roofing permit for a full replacement; requirements vary by city. We pull the required permits as part of the project so you’re not the one navigating city hall.

Will you handle HOA approval if my neighborhood requires it?

If your HOA has architectural review requirements, such as common shingle colors or material restrictions, let us know early so we can provide the documentation most HOAs require and help you avoid delays.

Does a new roof need to meet current building code, even on an older house?

Yes. A full re-roof generally has to meet current code, including decking, ventilation, and flashing details, regardless of what was there originally. This is one reason “like-for-like” quotes from less experienced crews can miss required upgrades.

Maintenance & Protection Plans

What is included in your roof protection/maintenance plan?

Precision Roofing Works offers three roof protection plans designed to help homeowners stay ahead of maintenance, catch potential issues early, and receive priority service when they need it.

  • The Precision Primary Plan includes one inspection per year, post-storm inspections upon request, priority service, insurance claim assistance, and 5% off other services.
  • The Precision Plus Plan includes two inspections per year plus a post-storm inspection, one gutter cleaning per year, priority service, minor repairs, patches and sealing, one bundle of shingles, insurance claim assistance, and 10% off other services.
  • The Precision Premium Plan includes two inspections per year plus a post-storm inspection, two gutter cleanings per year, priority service, minor repairs, patches and sealing, one bundle of shingles, no-fee emergency calls, and 15% off other services.

These plans are designed to provide homeowners with ongoing roof care and peace of mind while helping extend the life of their roof.

What can I do as a homeowner to extend my roof’s life?

Keep gutters clear, trim overhanging branches, schedule an annual inspection, and address minor leaks or missing shingles quickly rather than waiting. Small issues left through a Texas summer and hail season compound fast.

Do you offer roof maintenance without a full replacement?

Yes, we handle repairs and maintenance-scope work, not just full replacements. Maintenance items include flashing, vents, minor leaks, and storm-damage patch repairs.
